Gallery x Chiao is pleased to present “Outside In II” at Spring/Break LA 2024 Int/Ext exhibition in Culver City, California, features a group show of five artists who currently reside or have experienced living in Southern California—Roast Hoggmann, Chiao-Chih LU, Yae Jee MIN, Yu Wen WANG, and Heath West.

Updated price list of exhibition artworks is available here. Please inquire for more detailed information.

This exhibition at LA Spring Break Art Show 2024 is a sequel to the four person show that was on view at Gallery x Chiao Taipei during December 2023. Featuring paintings, works on paper and sculptures, the artists’ works depict the surroundings they have immersed themselves in, as well as the physical and psychological impact of these environments.

The contrast of bold minimalist paintings by Heath West with landscapes that pay tribute to traditional California plein air paintings by Roast Hoggmann, explores the dynamic of “within and without.” Like the moment when a camera shutter is pressed, we are capturing moments of beauty in front of us that are simultaneously reflected in our inner world.

Yae Jee Min’s poetic abstract, shimmery mixed-media paintings allow the viewer to enter a world of mysterious and romantic inner landscapes. Yu Wen Wang’s tactile paintings and Chiao-Chih Lu’s ceramic sculptures examine and reinterpret stereotypical “Californian” activities and the biomes and plants native to this environment through whimsical lenses.

The places the artists have experienced are transformed into a reflection of gratitude and appreciation for the place where they are. “Outside In II” is collectively a depiction of the physical and spiritual world intertwined and a love letter to Southern California.

About the Artists

Roast Hoggmann (b. 1989, Indianapolis, IN) currently lives and works in Orange County, California. He works in paintings and also on paper and sculptures. He received a BFA in Painting from Indiana University, Bloomington. He has shown with Craig Kroll Gallery (Los Angeles), Art Formosa and Art Taipei (2021) with Gallery x Chiao (Taipei, Taiwan) and Artnutri Gallery (Taichung, Taiwan).

Chiao-Chi LU (b. 1994, Taiwan) currently lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan. She holds a BFA from Art Center College of Design (2017), and her works has been exhibited in major Taiwanese museums including Yingge Museum of Ceramic Art (Yingge, Taiwan) and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (Kaohsiung, Taiwan).

Yae Jee Min is an interdisciplinary artist. She holds a MFA and BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in psychology from Boston University. Using intersected methodologies of painting and craft, she investigates nostalgia through abstraction and materiality. Through whimsy and childish haphazard zones, she create spaces in which memories, nostalgia and identity both engage and entangle with one another. Whether it is dealing with specific moments of domestic spaces, sleep deprivation, mental illness, and femininity; her work confronts these spaces of familiarity with whimsicality to allow viewers into the moment safely, allowing polemic thoughts to be buffered by notions of blanket warmth. Her work has been exhibited internationally and nationally including Seoul Museum of Arts, Torrance Art Museum, and DfbrL8r Gallery.

Yu Wen Wang (b. 1990, Taiwan) holds an MFA from California of the Arts San Francisco (2018) and a BFA from National Chiayi University Taiwan (2013). While her strong painting techniques is recognized through years of professional training in classical painting she received in Taiwan; studying contemporary art in the United States has influenced her to observe her surroundings and daily life with a newfound whimsical perspective.

Heath West (b. 1976, Houston, Texas) lives and works in Joshua Tree, California. Recent exhibitions include Gallery x Chiao (2023, Taipei, Taiwan) and Galleri Urbane (Dallas, 2020). His work has also appeared in group shows with 0-0.LA (Los Angeles, 2017), Harper’s Books (East Hampton, 2016), and GIFC/Velvet Ropes (Copenhagen and NYC, 2018 and 2019). His paintings have been featured in the recent publications of Friend of the Artist (2018), Grapefruit Magazine (2018), and Anxy (2018), along with online articles in Booooooom (2020), It’s Nice That (2019), and A Series of Rooms (2019). West is a recipient of the 2017 grant in painting from The Peter S. Reed Foundation.
